Let's Celebrate Literacy!

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” (Dr. Seuss)

September is a month to celebrate all things literacy! With Roald Dahl day taking place on 13th September and national ‘Read a Book’ day having just taken place we thought it would be a great opportunity to look at some popular classics and some of our favourites too!

Reading a good book can be just as exciting as the latest binge-worthy series or movie! Aside from compelling stories that might be hard to put down, there are many other benefits to reading:

  • Reading for pleasure early in childhood is linked to better cognitive performance and mental wellbeing in adolescence.
  • Studies have found that reading for pleasure enhances empathy, understanding of the self, and the ability to understand one’s own and others’ identities.
  • Regular readers for pleasure in the UK reported fewer feelings of stress and depression than non-readers.
  • 44% of regular readers said reading had improved their mental health and wellbeing.
  • Studies have shown that those who read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations. Reading for pleasure was also associated with better sleeping patterns.

While reading can be educational, we also believe in its power to develop imagination and hope for its readers.
It can provide escapism for those feeling lonely or someone wanting to relax after a stressful day by engrossing the reader in new places and characters.

It’s also a great activity that can be shared and explored over and over again!
